A Week in the Life of a Resident
Shifts rotate while in the Emergency Department, with a strong effort made to minimize stress of shift changes and maintain circadian rhythms (as well as following the ACGME Residency Duty Hour requirements).

Shift length is 10 hours, and start times are staggered throughout the day to provide optimum education for residents and coverage for the department.
  • PGY1 residents work 21 shifts per month
  • PGY2 residents work 20 shifts per month
  • PGY3 residents work 18 shifts per month
Residents have two weekends off per month when in the department

Our weekly conferences are held on Thursday mornings from 8:00am to 1:30pm. Residents are excused from outside services and the ED for conference attendance. Conference topics include: resident grand rounds, faculty lectures, case conferences, radiology conferences, EMS reviews, guest lecturers, M&M, research conference, critically appraised topics, Team STEPPS, quality and safety, and quarterly oral board simulations.
